Healthy Start, Grow Smart Series (2002)

This series of booklets about infant development was an initiative of
Laura Bush as the First Lady of Texas and sponsored by the Texas Department
of Health. The U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services and U.S. Department of Agriculture are revising and
distributing the series. Each of the four booklets is available on this
site in pdf format for downloading.

This guide, developed by the National Research Council,
explains how children learn to read and how adults can help them.
Starting Out
Right: A Guide to Promoting Children's Reading Success, provides
ideas that parents, educators, policy-makers, and others can use to help
prepare preschool children for formal reading instruction; outlines important
concepts about language and literacy for beginning readers; and addresses
how to prevent reading difficulties in early childhood and the primary
grades. The book includes 55 activities that are based on an exhaustive
review of research contained in the 1998 National Research Council report
Preventing Reading
Difficulties in Young Children.

Developed by Reading is Fundamental, this guide provides
a list of items related to reading development that parents can use as
a “checkup” to see if their child is where they should be
developmentally from birth to grade 3 and up.The site also provides tips
for parents on how they can enhance their child’s reading abilities
